Captain Marvel discovers that his exposure to a form of nerve gas several years before has given him cancer, and it's now only a matter of time before he succumbs to it. As the greatest minds in the Marvel Universe scramble for a cure (echoing our own world's frustrations with the disease), Marvel makes his peace with friends and foes alike before silently passing into a coma. Writer and artist Jim Starlin was using superheroes to write a very human story about the pain and anguish that comes hand in hand with a disease that devastates millions of ordinary people. His story was -- and remains -- so powerful that Marvel has never resurrected the character, knowing that a stunt like that would cheapen what has become one of the most moving stories ever published in mainstream comics.
